Children and teachers alike escaped nursery duties at Lutheran Preschool in Martin and recently enjoyed five days of skiing on the massive Turiec hills. This winter’s weather was less than cooperative and we had feared the ski trip would be canceled. But God loves us and He blessed us with wonderful snowy slopes and temperatures just a few degrees below zero for the whole five days. After taking the time to evaluate my culture before going on trip in Slovakia I got a better picture of what my values are, which I used to evaluate the culture that I experienced.
I am Rachel Lytie, student of Concordia University Wisconsin. My trip consisted of ten days mostly in Slovakia, but also seeing Austria, Czech Republic, and Poland. This trip was made up of two other Concordia students and me. I had the opportunity to stay at Martin Bible School which is located in Slovakia towards the north of the country. We have had a dear friend Tea from Finland, visit us in Slovakia. She and her friend Elina served to our children in Lutheran elementary school in Martin during last school term. THANK YOU FOR SERVING!!
Tea´s life in Finland is pretty much settled now. She studying and working as before. Two students, Oskar Fatul from Year VIII of our basic school and Daniel Dulla from class 1.A of our newly-established high school, recently participated in the Žilina regional round of the Olympiada competition for English. The Olympiada is a comprehensive test of students’ knowledge of grammar and vocabulary as well as their listening, speaking and reading skills. An organization called “Ars_Litera” focuses on bringing authors into local high schools and school libraries to do readings from their works. Seeing the value of such a program, Lutheran Academy in Martin decided to participate in this program. The aim is to allow students to meet Slovak writers through personal visits to the schools.
