This year’s EGMT Freshman Camp was full of fellowship, friendship, and fun! The camp had the theme of Noah’s Ark, which was used as a basis for our camp teams and drama skit. Noah’s Ark also fit our camp painting of the Biblical event and day hike to the local zoo. Just as those on the Ark had to trust God and come together as a group, our campers learned to work together as a team before they embark on their journey through high school together. Most 14-year-old girls say they enjoy many pastimes. But Lutheran Academy student Kristina Jesenská channels all her free time into one interest: sports. Kristina has won several athletic competitions in Slovakia: the 1500-meter run, triathlon, the duathlon (a “run-bike-run” event), and the aquathon, a swim-run competition. Continue reading →
The sport of water polo is growing in popularity in Slovakia. The first mention of this game in Slovak history dates back to 1840, when players reportedly balanced themselves astride empty barrels in a body of water (as if riding a horse) and, armed with paddles, attempted to hit a ball into goals on either side of the playing area. The game’s similarity to the land-based version earned it the name “water polo.” Slovakia’s men’s water-polo team has been competing internationally since the 1990s and made its first Olympic Games appearance in 2000. The national Biblical Olympiad was held on the last day of April at the Lutheran School in Banska Bystrica. Zuzana Bulovská, the winner in the first division (students in the 3rd and 4th grades) will begin attending school at Lutheran Academy in Martin this autumn.
