Christmas Social Project: We are Thinking and Praying for Refugees
The involvement of students in school social projects is one of the fundamental characteristics of the school. Lutheran Academy (LA) doesn´t forget it even during Advent. Students were encouraged to find practical ways to help neighbors and the needy in order to enrich the educational program with the practical application of Christian values. This year’s Christmas social project aimed at understanding and helping with refugee issues. Continue reading
Christmas at the Lutheran Academy: The Birth of Christ Changed the World
Christmas this year at the Lutheran Academy was celebrated in many ways—programs for all classes and grades, the exchange of products whose proceeds will go to help refugees, and the Christmas banquet, organized by high school students—but all the activities of this year’s Advent were connected by a single theme—the Light. Parents, grandparents, and the whole community could see it plainly on the invitation posters. The words came from the Gospel of John: “The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:5).
BratMUN
Two delegations full of expectations and ready to have some adventure, were heading to Bratislava to a well-known MUN conference. The delegations were Greece and Peru. The delegation of Greece was formed of two members, Rastislav Jonis and Kade Mackintosh (me, the writer).
The honored delegation of Peru consisted of Oskar Fatul, Patrik Tomáš and Sabina Šimková. Continue reading

Peter Petrovič, Kindergarten Teacher in Martin: What I learned alongside experienced teachers in England
In his youth, Peter went to Britain, where he worked as an Au-Pair, and continued his education at a secondary pedagogical school in London. This was actually Peter’s second high school experience, while he also worked in a kindergarten, loving the opportunity to work with young children. Very naturally and spontaneously, he came to the decision to continue his studies at one of the best colleges of education in the world. As a graduate of this specialized school, Peter worked in a variety of preschools in London, including some in England’s poorest neighborhoods… Continue reading

Meet the Americans: An Interview with Blythe and Tony Barreto – Part 2
Just 16 years after its founding, the Center for Christian Education regularly serves more than 600 people through its comprehensive ministries. We are very thankful for people—especially missionary couples—who have a heart for ministry in Slovakia! One such couple is Midwesterners Blythe and Tony Barreto, who arrived in Martin in June 2015 to spend two years at CCE. Graduates of Concordia University Chicago and recent newlyweds, these Americans offer an added dimension to the students’ learning experience and to the Academy staff. We are blessed to have them here. This is part 2 of a two-part story about the Barretos.
Greetings to All
You may be wondering why you are receiving this e-mail? It is because you are individuals of distinction, who have participated during the formative years of growing the Christian faith in Slovakia. This progress could not have been made if it were not for your Faith in Jesus that led you to assist the people God so loves. You are now being invited to be a part of a fantastic opportunity as part of the full circle process in establishing Christian Education, from pre-school through high school in Martin. The April, 2016 Builders Trip is dedicated to all who have been part of the Builders Group in the past. However, I want to make it clear that this mission is open to all first time participants who would like to be a part of this mission. All are welcome! Continue reading

Meet Mirka Konrádová: Math Teacher Extraordinaire
Mirka Konrádová teaches mathematics at the Lutheran Academy in Martin. She credits her passion for math to having great math teachers during her childhood. Today, Mirka is one of only four educators in Slovakia credentialed to teach mathematics (and train other teachers) in the “Hejný method,” a non-traditional approach in which students learn math principles by solving interesting math problems rather than by memorizing formulas. Originated in the 1990s by mathematician Milan Hejný, the innovative technique is gaining popularity in Europe as well as in Canada. Continue reading
