“We have no right to judge, but we have the responsibility to help”–A new Social Project at Lutheran Academy in Martin

The topic of the sermon,’cleansing the Temple,’ based on the biblical text in the Gospel of John was not a coincidence. School pastor Janka Bosakova reminded pupils of the need to cleanse the human heart of evil, prejudice, and indifference. He linked the biblical example from the fourth evangelist with a social project at Lutheran Academy (LA), which began simultaneously with Lent (fasting).

Having a right response to domestic violence

The aim of this social project is cooperation with an organization called Briezdenie and to educate students, parents, and the wider public about the various faces of domestic violence. The main goal of this fasting project is to help students to respond correctly to situations when they are confronted with domestic violence, its victims, or when they are witnesses of it.

Magdalena Filova, Director of the non-profit organization Briezdenie, was invited to speak at the student worship service at LA. This organization operates a Home Center for women and children who have been victims of domestic violence. Staff at Home Center seek to provide love, acceptance, and a safe and peaceful environment to mothers, children, and pregnant women. They provide advice and assistance in the women and children’s return to a ‘normal’ life. At the same time, they encourage their clients to learn to trust other people again, and to have hope for their futures.

Student Interest

The opportunity to learn more about this issue was offered to students at LA in Martin. Students asked many specific questions. They wondered how people who have experienced domestic violence learn about the Center. They were interested in the living conditions in the Center, what the capacity of the Center is, and how many people the Center has already helped. They were particularly focused on how the women and children did after leaving the Center. Were they able to adjust to a normal life? Were the adults able to find jobs? Is it possible to stop domestic violence? There were so many questions and so much interest that school pastor Janka Bosakova called students to show their true concern by assisting the Center through their specific social project activities.

There were vaious activities aimed at helping the Center care for abused mothers and children. Students organized a collection of canned foods, dishes, cleaning agents, and bed linens. These items were taken to the Center. High School students visited the Center and led programs, games, and other fun activities, with the children living there. In return, clients of the Center and some of the social workers visited the school.

Ongoing Support

To support this project, students suggested various creative activities and mini-projects to make money intended to help the Center. Students worked hard and are worthy of much blessing! Through the students’ involvement, parents and grandparents also got involved in the school social project. Altogether, we can learn to help and be sensitive to the needs of others—and to their often-invisible pain.

How was our social project this year? EXCELLENT!!!

Domestic violence is when "blame is substituted for love, safety is replaced by fear, distress and anxiety are rampant, and people only care about their own interests." The saddest fact is that when home loses its intended essence, it's not just the adult's world that changes, but also the world of the children.

The beautify of family and home is a very fragile thing. 7th grade students reminded us of this in their Easter program in church during the Sunday worship service. Students presented scenes of what home means in both a positive and negative sense. Home is experiencing security, safety, love, and care in everyday life. "However, sometimes things happen...and people hurt those they should be closest to," the students reminded us.

Behind the hundreds of euros was the enormous tenacity and hard work of all the students in the LA in Martin. They showed what charity means in practice throughout the Lent part of the year. A social project that aimed at helping the needy was accomplished by various activities, discussions, and lectures on the topic "domestic violence," its detection and how to stop it.

Younger students prepared hundreds of sandwiches, salads, or snacks; they organized an auction of portraits, and they sold their own toys so they could support the social project. The proceeds of all these activities went to support abused mothers and their children.

Lutheran high school students even voluntarily became 'slaves' in order to serve others. The money received was added to the growing gift.

The idea of a slave auction is described by student Andy Snovakova: "Each of us high school students became a slave to his/her 'owner' for a few hours. The slave offered his service and declared the starting price for which he or she was willing to perform the service. The one, who bid the highest amount, got the slave."

The slave services were different. You could buy a massage for your back, mowing of your lawn, vacuuming, cleaning, child care, baking muffins, or delivery service of your shopping. "Slavery" occurred between students, too. Among the students, slaves were 'bought' to do homework(!), tutoring, or preparing snacks for the whole week!

A LOTTERY was the fun conclusion and the end of the fasting social project. Students bought ticks to help abused mothers and children. They also got a small reward for themselves.

The main prize of the Lottery was lunch with school director Jozef Sopoliga. They were also delighted by a huge cake made by student pastor Janka Bosakova. They enjoyed cycling, zumba, and vouchers for handmade items from teachers.

The student's willingness to make a huge effort on these social activities is a valuable example for even the adults. Parents themselves often are encouraged to get involved in the school social projects.

The Lutheran Academy in Martin sometimes works on large social projects twice a year. These projects involve the whole school, because "the involvement of each class and each student shows their growing perception of what it means to help the poor and needy," explains director Jozef Sopoliga.

The frequency and depth of social project activities at Lutheran Academy has aided Slovak non-profit organizations, which have been dealing with social assistance to the needy in Slovakia and abroad. Last year, Lutheran Academy received a rare award, given annually by this organization. Our school was recognized for "linking global education, donations, and education for tolerance and openness."

  2. Sng Bee Bee says:

This is how Christians can have a lasting positive effect on the community, by taking up the social responsibility for the needy. Jesus Himself teaches us to care for the orphans and widows in the bible.
