English as a Foreign language

Do you know what the Slovak words „rodina“, „priateľstvo“ or „zmrzlina“ means? The same questions were asked of Slovak students this summer, only about English words! American teachers from Vancouver, Washington, and San Luis Obispo, California, came to the CCE and taught 75 Slovak students how to improve their conversational English.

Several models of “simplified English” have been suggested or developed for international communication. One of them is English as a Foreign Language. 75 students worked on their English for two whole weeks in the Center for Christian Education. Some of them tried to understand this system of simplified English. Others learned how to use basic grammar and pronunciation. Everyone had a wonderful time as they learned English and became friends with their American teachers.

Most of the difficulties that learners face in the study of English is a consequence of the degree to which their native language differs from English. A native speaker of Chinese, for example, may face many more difficulties than a native speaker of German, because German is closely related to English, whereas Chinese is not. This may be true for anyone of any mother tongue setting out to learn any other language

The goal of EFL at CCE is to give deeper knowledge about English and also about the Bible and the Christian life, while equipping our students for further ministry. At the end of the two-weeks course, the 75 students received their certificates and were very excited over their new relationships and knowledge. “Most of us probably still need some practice in English, but we started! We did it, and this is the most important”, said one EFL students.
